The name’s hue!
My name is rachel benfield (she/he/they), otherwise known as huemourless. I’m a 23 year old artist from new england who specializes in raster illustration, specifically concept, asset, poster, and splash illustrations. I’ve been working digitally since I was 13, and have been in this field professionally since 2022. i received my bachelor of fine arts degree in illustration with honors in may 2025.
i’ve been drawing since before i can remember, literally, and It grew into a passion when i was around 10, bored during school and doodling in the margins of my work. i’ve always had an eye for perspective and color, which gave me a jumpstart in my initial practices and studies. i started out with pencil and eventually shifted to digital illustration after discovering the medium through artists i found on the internet, such as Viktoria ‘Viria’ petrovska and Karina Farek of drawfee, amongst many others. i taught myself almost everything i know about digital illustration, and i’m always open to learning more in order to push my limits and grow—both as an artist an a person.
something that has always pushed my creativity is my synesthesia. synesthesia is the ability to correlate one sense with another; in my case, i can see music. music has always been a vital part of my everyday life, from long and winding family car trips at a young age to simply walking to or from my university classes and everything in between. music always has a story and a mood, and mood is a factor of emotions—something I experience vividly, strongly. the more i feel towards a song, and the more emotion i think a song has, the stronger the image becomes.
presently, my largest inspirations in the visual arts are jen zee, simon stålenhag, and yoshitaka amano. their individual techniques, styles, and overall composing expertise each bring their own unique sparks of creative motivation to me. I also find much inspiration from the classic aesthetics of romanticism (e.g. wanderer above the sea of clouds, caspar david friedrich), baroque and the practice of chiaroscuro, and the semi-abstract styles of impressionism. an honorable mention to art deco, neo-classicism, european gothic architecture, and mid-century modernism, which aren’t all necessarily styles that inspire my art, but definitely my awe.

FAQ
what's your medium of choice?
my preference is digital raster illustration! the software i use is a free application called krita, which has professional software and tools, and also doubles as an animation program (though it requires an extra step in the install to actually utilize). I have a decent amount of experience in photoshop and a little bit in adobe illustrator.
i don’t only do digital work, however! i’ve had my fair experience in charcoal, graphite, colored pencil, and a little watercolor. i’m also in the fields of digital mixed media and photography. if you’re interested in some of my work, go check it out in my portfolio!
what's your area of expertise?
character concept design! from designing clothes to companions to characters themselves, i love creating new personalities and the world surrounding them, down to their smallest knick-knacks and physical characteristics. I also love doing character “splash” art, a term I take from video games; if you’ve ever seen a very detailed drawing or painting of one specific character in media that has little-to-no background, that’s a splash illustration. They allow viewers an idea of how the character might act, or what aesthetics they follow. splash illustrations give me a chance to explore characters beyond their concept sheets, in a similar manner to that of an expression sheet.
Do you take commissions?
Yes! I will announce commission slots on my bluesky, tumblr, and instagram when they become available. there will also be a commission page on my website when they open up, and i will send out a newsletter to those who are subscribed to it.
